When most people hear “Oktoberfest,” they picture giant beer steins, pretzels, and lively celebrations. While all of that is certainly part of the experience, Oktoberfest is so much more than a beer festival.
Held each year in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk festival, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe. What many people don’t realize is that despite its name, most of the festival actually takes place in September, ending in early October.
The tradition dates back to 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the royal wedding, and what began as a one-time event has grown into a beloved annual tradition lasting more than 200 years.
Walking through the festival grounds feels like stepping into a celebration of Bavarian culture. You’ll find locals dressed in traditional clothing, with women wearing beautiful dirndls and men sporting classic lederhosen. Brass bands fill the air with music, while horse-drawn carriages, colourful decorations, and lively beer tents create an unforgettable atmosphere.
