Last week, I shared the story behind Oktoberfest in Germany. This week, we’re travelling a little farther east to Switzerland to talk about a tradition that I truly think deserves a spot on every travel lover’s bucket list.
Call me weird, but I think the Alpabzug is one of the most beautiful traditions in the world.
If you’ve never heard of it, the Alpabzug (also called Desalpe in French-speaking regions of Switzerland) is the annual journey when farmers bring their cows down from the alpine pastures after spending the summer high in the mountains.
Now, before you picture a simple herd of cows walking down a hill… think again.
The cows are lovingly decorated with enormous handcrafted flower crowns, giant ceremonial bells, ribbons, and intricate leather harnesses. Farmers and their families dress in traditional Swiss clothing, music fills the villages, local markets come alive, and communities gather to celebrate a tradition that has been passed down for generations.
It’s not a performance created for tourists.
It’s a way of life.
For centuries, Swiss farmers have spent the summer months grazing their cattle in the Alps. As autumn approaches and the first signs of colder weather arrive, they make the journey back to the valleys. If the season was successful, with healthy animals and no major losses, it’s celebrated with pride and gratitude.
I love experiences like this because they remind us that travel isn’t just about famous landmarks.
It’s about witnessing traditions that have stood the test of time.
When does Alpabzug take place?
Most Alpabzug celebrations take place from late August through early October, with September being the most popular month. Different villages celebrate on different dates, so there are many opportunities to experience it throughout Switzerland.
