Oceans take you to countries … Rivers take you through them
When most people think of cruising, they picture big ocean ships sailing from country to country. But river cruising is a whole different experience.
🌊 Oceans take you to countries. Rivers take you through them. Instead of just visiting a port city, you glide right through the heart of towns and villages. You see everyday life along the riverbanks, pass vineyards, castles, and historic landmarks — all from your own stateroom.
⏳ Many river cruises stay longer in port so you can really explore and enjoy each place without feeling rushed.
🏰 One of my favourite routes is along the Rhine River, starting in Amsterdam and ending in beautiful Basel, Switzerland. Along the way, you’ll pass over 40  castles and fortresses, many perched on hillsides on both sides of the river. It truly feels like sailing through a storybook.
🤝 Intimate experience: Most river ships carry between 144 and 196 guests. That means no long lines for drinks, dining, or getting on and off the ship. You’ll have more time to enjoy the amenities and connect with fellow travelers and crew members who quickly get to know you.
🌙 No need to rush back: Many departures from port are later in the afternoon or evening. That means you can enjoy the nightlife in select ports — whether it’s an evening walk through cobblestone streets, a local show or performance, or one last glass of wine after dinner while listening to a local musician. It’s a special way to immerse yourself in the culture alongside the locals.
🍷 Tip for foodies: AmaWaterways is my top pick for dining on the rivers. They have world-class chefs who create dishes inspired by the region you’re sailing through, so every meal feels like part of the journey. All excursions are included, drinks are included, and you can enjoy à la carte meals every single day.
💡 And here’s a myth worth busting… river cruising isn’t just for “older” travelers. I’ve seen couples, friends, solo travelers, and even families love it. If you enjoy a slower pace, authentic experiences, and scenery that changes every time you look out the window, this is for you.
From the Danube to the Rhine, the Douro to the Seine, there’s a river cruise for every travel style.
