Every year, the UN’s World Tourism Organization tracks international arrivals by country, and the results are always fascinating. Here are the top 5 most visited countries in the world right now:
1. France – 100+ million visitors in 2024
France became the first country in history to cross the 100 million visitor mark, and it has held the number one spot for over 30 years. The Paris Olympics gave it a boost, but the truth is France earns its ranking every single year. Paris alone could fill a month of your life and still leave things undone. But France is so much more than the Eiffel Tower. The Loire Valley with its fairy tale chateaux. The lavender fields of Provence. The sun-soaked villages of the Cote d’Azur. The wine roads of Bordeaux and Burgundy. France is a country that rewards slow travel, good food, and a willingness to wander without a rigid agenda.
2. Spain – nearly 94 million arrivals
Spain is not far behind, and it is easy to see why. Barcelona dazzles with Gaudi’s architecture and its electric waterfront. Madrid pulses with world-class art museums and a nightlife scene that genuinely does not start until midnight. But the Spain that stays with you is often found elsewhere. The whitewashed hilltop villages of Andalusia. The dramatic coastline of San Sebastian. The ancient pilgrimage routes of the Camino de Santiago. The Balearic Islands for something quieter and bluer than you expected. Spain has something for every kind of traveler, and it consistently over-delivers on both culture and cuisine.
3. United States – over 72 million international visitors
The US makes this list for obvious reasons: it is enormous, endlessly varied, and genuinely unlike anywhere else on earth. International visitors come for New York City’s energy, the otherworldly landscapes of the national parks, the music and food culture of New Orleans, the desert magic of Sedona and the Southwest, and the coastal cool of California. What surprises most visitors is how different each region feels, almost like traveling through several countries within one. For Canadians especially, it is easy to underestimate just how spectacular a proper American road trip or national park adventure can be.
4. Turkey – a quiet climber that deserves your attention
This one surprises people every time. Istanbul alone welcomed 23 million visitors in 2024, a 14% jump from the year before, and Turkey as a whole keeps rising. Istanbul is one of the most layered cities on the planet, straddling two continents, with Byzantine history, Ottoman grandeur, incredible food, and a bazaar culture that will pull you in for hours. Beyond Istanbul, Cappadocia offers hot air balloon rides over a lunar landscape of carved rock and cave hotels. The Turquoise Coast delivers crystal-clear water and ancient ruins in the same afternoon. Turkey offers extraordinary value and experiences that are genuinely hard to find anywhere else in Europe or the Middle East.
5. Italy – the one that never goes out of style
Italy does not need to try. Rome alone carries thousands of years of history on streets you can walk in an afternoon. Florence holds more Renaissance art per square mile than perhaps anywhere else on earth.
The Amalfi Coast is exactly as dramatic and beautiful as every photograph promises. Tuscany rewards those who slow down, rent a villa, and spend a week doing very little at a very high quality. The Italian Lakes, Venice, Sicily, the Dolomites – Italy keeps giving no matter how many times you have been. It is the destination I am asked about most, and honestly, it never gets old for me either.
What does this mean for you as a traveler? It means these destinations are popular for very real reasons. It also means that if you want the magic without the mayhem, timing, pacing, and planning matter more than ever. Knowing where to go, when to go, and how to move through a country is exactly the difference between a trip that exhausts you and one that stays with you.
