Travel Advisors inspecting Properties in Mexico

Why do I need a Travel Advisor if I can book it myself?

This is a question that I am asked often.

Years ago, a travel agent’s role was mostly transactional, simply booking flights or hotels. Then, airlines and suppliers made it easier for consumers to book on their own, and many thought travel agents would disappear altogether. Instead, the role evolved.

Travel agents became travel advisors — and that difference matters, no matter how subtle it may appear.

So what is a travel advisor, and what can we do for you?

A travel advisor offers firsthand knowledge of resorts, cruises, tours, and hotels. Many of us have personally toured or stayed at the destinations you’re considering. That means we can tell you what to expect — the good, the bad, and everything in between — and recommend options that truly match your travel style.

A good travel advisor is part designer, part project manager.

We design the trip, and then we manage it — every step of the way.

Experienced advisors have close connections with suppliers and Business Development Managers (BDMs). When issues arise, I can often pick up the phone and speak directly with someone who can help — sometimes even waiving unnecessary fees or resolving problems quickly. In other words, having a travel advisor will save you from a multitude of calls.

Additionally, advisors understand cruise ships inside and out. We know which cabins are quieter, which ones offer better value, and which locations to avoid, all because we’ve walked those decks ourselves.

And when something goes wrong, your travel advisor is the one on hold with the airline while you enjoy the last day of your vacation.

Above all, a good travel advisor looks out for your best interests. We guide you, educate you, and handle the details so you can unwind on the trip you’ve worked hard for.

Travel advisors also have access to insider perks that the general public often doesn’t. These range from private transfers, special dining experiences, spa credits, and thoughtful extras that elevate a trip from ordinary to memorable.

At the end of the day, you work hard for your money, and deserve to feel proud with how you’ve spent it. Hence why your vacation should feel smooth, well-planned, and worry-free.

Just as you’d call a professional electrician to install pot lights in your home, having a professional travel advisor manage your trip ensures that it’s done with care, expertise, and peace of mind.

And here in Ontario, travel advisors must be licensed by TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario). This licensing exists to protect consumers. Unfortunately, many “deals” that seem too good to be true come from sellers who aren’t licensed, leaving travelers without protection when things go wrong.

If you’re planning a trip and want guidance, reassurance, and someone truly in your corner, I’m always happy to help — even if you’re just at the dreaming stage.

Sometimes a simple conversation makes all the difference.
